This is gaslighting—the art of making people question what they saw, heard, or experienced. And it's not just a defensive tactic. It's a complete reality-restructuring technique that, when mastered, makes you essentially immune to accountability.

It doesn't matter if you've actually checked with "everyone else." The suggestion that they're alone in their perception is often enough to make them doubt themselves.

Phrase #4: "You're Being Too Sensitive"

Reframe their legitimate concern as an emotional overreaction.

Someone: "You insulted me in front of the entire office."

You: "I was joking. Can't you take a joke? You're being way too sensitive. Everyone else thought it was funny."

Now the issue isn't your insult—it's their thin skin. They're the problem, not you.

Phrase #5: "I Would Never Do That"

Appeal to character to deny possibility.

Someone: "You stole credit for my idea."

You: "I would never do something like that. You know me. That's not who I am. I'm honestly hurt that you'd even think I'm capable of that."

You're not denying the specific incident—you're making them feel guilty for even suggesting you could do such a thing. Now they're apologizing to you.

Case Study: The Phantom Raise

Let me tell you about a perfect gaslighting operation I executed.

I had an employee, Gerald, who believed I'd promised him a raise. The truth? I had. Very clearly. In front of three other people. I'd said, "Gerald, great work on the Gringotts account. I'm giving you a 20% raise starting next month."

Next month came. No raise.

Gerald approached me: "About that raise you promised..."

I looked at him with complete confusion: "What raise?"

"The 20% raise you promised last month. For the Gringotts work."

Advanced Technique: The Reverse Gaslight

Here's a truly dark move: accuse someone of gaslighting YOU when they're trying to hold you accountable.

Someone: "You said you'd finish this project by Tuesday."

You: "Why are you trying to gaslight me? I clearly said Friday. I know you're trying to manipulate me into working faster, but I see what you're doing. That's really dishonest of you."

This is brilliant because:

You've reversed the dynamic completely
They're now defending themselves instead of holding you accountable
You've introduced the language of manipulation, making them look bad
Even if they prove you're wrong, you can claim you "misremembered" and they'll look petty for pressing the issue

This week, I want you to practice casual gaslighting in low-stakes situations.

Examples:

Tell someone they're wearing a different color than they are, then insist they're wrong about their own clothes
Claim a conversation from yesterday never happened

Watch their reactions. Most people will initially be confused, then start questioning themselves. Some will push back, but if you stay confident, many will eventually doubt their own memories.

Rule #1: Never Break Character

The moment you acknowledge reality, even slightly, your gaslight collapses.

Wrong Response: "Okay, maybe I said something like that, but—"

Right Response: "No. I didn't. You're mistaken. Moving on."

No wavering. No half-admissions. No acknowledgment that they might have a point. Complete, confident, immovable denial.

The gaslight only works if you never break.

Rule #2: Use Specificity Against Them

When someone tries to pin you down with details, overwhelm them with contradictory specificity.

Someone: "You said 3pm on Tuesday."

You: "I specifically remember saying 3pm on Thursday. It was right after I had lunch with the Minister. I remember because the Minister made a joke about punctuality and it stuck in my mind. I can recall the entire conversation. Very clear in my mind. 3pm Thursday. Not Tuesday."

The detail makes your lie sound more credible than their accurate memory. People assume that specific details indicate accurate recall. They don't. But they sound convincing.

I once convinced an investor that he'd never invested in one of my failed businesses.

He had. He'd given me 50,000 Galleons. There were contracts, bank records, everything.

You're still denying reality, but nicely
The suggestion they need time off makes them seem unstable

It's gaslighting with a kindly face, which makes it much harder to fight against.

Practical Exercise 2: The Documentation Trap

This week, deliberately contradict documented evidence and see if you can make someone doubt the documentation.

Example: If an email clearly says one thing, insist it says something else. "That's not what the email says. I just read it. You're misinterpreting."

Most people won't actually pull up the email right there in the moment. They'll just be confused by your confidence. And even if they do show you the email, you can say, "Oh, that's a different email. I was thinking of the follow-up email where I clarified."

Practice making people doubt even written evidence. If you can successfully gaslight against documentation, you can gaslight anything.

Rule #3: Gaslight Groups, Not Just Individuals

The most powerful gaslighting happens when you convince an entire group to doubt their collective memory.

In a meeting: "No, that's not what we decided last week. We decided on the opposite approach. Everyone here knows that."

Half the people in the room probably weren't paying close attention last week. They'll assume you're right. The other half will see that "everyone" seems to agree with you and start questioning their own memory.

Before you know it, the entire group's collective memory has been rewritten by your confidence.

Use it or don't. But don't pretend you're shocked that it's in the curriculum.

Documentation: If everything's documented, gaslighting becomes harder (but not impossible)
